WHAT IS IT?

Board Certification in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is an indication a surgeon has completed speciality and subspeciality training to the highest standard and has completed an examination process to ensure competency in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

The journey so far

Dr. Honeybrook completed 8 years of specialist training in the United States in the specialities of General Surgery (1 year), Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (5 years) and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (2 years). This specialist training was in addition to 6 years of medical school training at University of New South Wales, Sydney, and 4 years of additional surgical internships and residency training rotations in Australia, totalling over 18 years of medical training.

Dr. Honeybrook completed the Board Certification process in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS) in the United States after 5 years of specialist training. This training focused on the face, nose, eyelids, head and neck and involved both cancer and reconstructive surgeries as well as training in aesthetic surgeries such as rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, and facelift.

Dr. Honeybrook then completed the rigorous process to become United States Board Certified in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and is the only surgeon in Australia to have obtained board certification from The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS). The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery only certifies US trained specialist head and neck surgeon. The only physicians who qualify for the board exam are board-certified diplomates of either The American Board of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery or The American Board of Plastic Surgery. As Dr. Honeybrook has dual international (Australian and United States) qualifications, this allows him to practice in both countries.

To become United States Board Certified in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery indicates a specialist surgeon has completed one the above two surgical specialties focusing on facial plastic surgery and has submitted for peer review a record of at least 2 years’ clinic experience in facial plastic surgery, including operative reports of a minimum of 100 facial plastic surgeries.

In addition to becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons and United States Board Certified in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Honeybrook completed additional training and examinations in Cosmetic Surgery to obtain American Board Certification in Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS). Dr. Honeybrook received the Robert F. Jackson award for highest score on the 2020 American Board of Cosmetic Surgery Examination.
