Upper eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a procedure used to address certain age-related or medically relevant changes in the upper eyelid area. These may include skin redundancy (excess or loose skin), changes in muscle tone, or tissue displacement. In some cases, these changes can interfere with the visual field or contribute to a sensation of eyelid heaviness.
The procedure may be performed for both functional and aesthetic reasons when supported by clinical assessment. As with any surgery, a discussion about the potential benefits, limitations, and risks is an essential part of informed consent. During a consultation at the office of Dr. Honeybrook – Facial Plastic Surgery in Brisbane, Australia, Dr. Adam Honeybrook will discuss these and other considerations with you.
Dr. Honeybrook is a specialist Australian Head and Neck Surgeon. He is also United States double board certified in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery through the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS), and in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery through the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS).
People may consider upper eyelid surgery due to:
Each case is assessed individually to determine whether the procedure is appropriate and clinically indicated.
The procedure typically involves making an incision within the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Through this incision, the surgeon can remove or reposition skin, fat, and muscle as needed. In some cases, adjunctive procedures such as a brow lift may be discussed based on clinical findings.
Risks and potential side effects can include swelling, bruising, dry eyes, changes in eyelid contour, and delayed healing. Your practitioner will provide personalised pre-operative and post-operative instructions to support a safe recovery. Visit our Patient Resources in the About section of this website for more pre-operative and post-operative information. Please note that these details represent general guidelines. You will be provided with specific instructions for care based on your needs.
Prior to surgery, your medical history and any medications will be reviewed. Instructions may be given to manage bleeding risk, assist with recovery, and reduce complications. Post-operative care often involves using prescribed ointments, attending follow-up appointments, and avoiding sun exposure to protect healing tissues.
