When the aging process contributes to puffiness, heaviness, and laxity or sagging around the eyes, we may look perpetually irritated, fatigued, or sad even when we are actually content and happy. Fortunately, you are at the right place to open your eyes, courtesy of skilled upper eyelid treatment (blepharoplasty). Dr. Adam Honeybrook is Australia’s only triple-board certified head/neck, facial plastic and reconstructive, and cosmetic surgeon. So, patients at our offices in Brisbane and Sydney can benefit from Dr. Honeybrook’s unique knowledge, skill, and experience.
All surgical candidates should generally be healthy. As we age, the skin loses collagen and elastin, which can result in excess crepey skin and can cause the upper eyelid to appear hooded. Furthermore, fat in the innermost corner of the upper eyelid can start to protrude, appearing as bulges around the eyes. There may also be involvement of the brow and forehead, which pulls down on the eyelids and is associated with the effects of gravity over time.
Not only does the upper blepharoplasty open up the eyelid/eyebrow region to restore a rejuvenated balance to the face, but it can also improve patients’ vision. Too much tissue in the upper eyelid can cause hooding so pronounced that it interferes with the ability to see clearly in the upward visual field. A small portion of the cost of treatment may be covered by insurance if deemed a “medically necessary” procedure.
Upper blepharoplasty is generally a \procedure that can be performed safely and comfortably under local anaesthetic in the office. Once fully numbed, Dr. Honeybrook accesses the excess/lax tissues through small openings made in the natural folds of the upper eyelid. Carefully placing these incisions in the supratarsal creases avoids visible scarring post-healing. Other techniques include removing excess fat in the inner corners of the eyes through openings beyond the outermost eyelid (to resolve hooding).
Dr. Honeybrook may recommend complementary procedures depending on your needs. These procedures include fat grafting to fill in hollowed-out areas. A small amount of fat may be taken from one location (such as the abdomen or thighs) and transferred to places with age-related volume loss that could use the augmentation the most. When upper blepharoplasty is performed in conjunction with other procedures, general anaesthetic may be required.
Swollen, bruised treatment sites are to be expected. However, these side effects are typically modest and should fade within one to two weeks. We provide detailed guidance on how to care for the surgical sites well before your procedure. Many patients can return to work and most normal activities about a week following surgery. As the swelling goes down, you will find that your visual field will often improve and that your eyes appear reawakened!
