Many patients in Brisbane and Sydney seek Dr Honeybrook’s expert opinion to improve the appearance of the neck and jawline, which can seemingly blend with the lower face and the collarbone. A deep neck lift may be recommended to you, and your team is pleased to walk you through five key points about our approach to this transformative procedure.
Neck lifts are generally well-suited to individuals who have experienced a loss of firmness in the neck but have otherwise retained the definition of their cheeks/mid-face and jaw. Candidates should also generally be healthy and have good skin elasticity. An isolated deep neck lift is often not recommended for patients over 45 as the concern is that the skin will not redrape to its full extent, and other procedures, such as a face and neck lift, may be recommended.
We keep referencing the “deep” neck lift, and notable distinctions exist between this approach and the techniques employed when performing a “traditional” neck lift. A fundamental difference is how, traditionally, a neck lift involves addressing the fat and platysma muscles, which are superficial central neck structures. With the deep neck lift approach, Dr. Honeybrook makes a single incision under he chin and skilfully addresses these superficial structures but also addresses the deep fat, digastric muscles and sometimes will recommend partial excision of the submandibular glands to adhieve a beautiful neck contour. Depending on factors such as the severity of skin laxity, another incision may be positioned behind the ears, which allows skin excision and tightening of the platysma muscle under the angle of the jaw to improve the depth of the jawline.
Once these incision(s) have been made, our surgeon can expertly access and “rework” the deeper muscle and fibrous tissue layers of the neck. In doing so, neckline contours are restored. As appropriate, Dr. Honeybrook may rework the structures below the muscle, such as the submandibular glands, which can contribute to a heavy or bulky appearance. Dr. Honeybrook may also place a drain on each side of your neck to minimise the risk of swelling and bruising. It is also not unusual to experience some swelling. Over a three- to four-month period, pink discolouration at the incision sites should fade. The line itself will also become less apparent over time. Any noticeable irregularities in the colour and texture of the incisions can easily be camouflaged with makeup. We will provide detailed instructions on after-care before your surgery.
Dr. Honeybrook can often combine surgical procedures to optimise your results from treatment. For instance, buccal fat pad reduction or chin implants may be an appropriate addition to the deep neck lift surgery for those individuals with rounded and full faces who seek a more angular or defined appearance. Additionally, lasers help to bring out the best in the skin and your results from treatment by transforming wrinkled or aging tissue in the treatment area.
Dr. Honeybrook is Australia’s only triple-boarded surgeon (head/neck, facial plastic/reconstructive, cosmetic surgery). As such, he is adept at performing innovative changes to traditional procedures and has often learned these techniques from the globally recognised surgeons who first pioneered them in the United States. With his unique skill and experience in these innovative techniques, your results are largely durable and long-lasting. You can also take steps to preserve or sustain those results for as long as possible, knowing that we cannot stop the clock but periodically and temporarily “reset” it.
Pay attention to your neck when applying sunscreen and other skincare products. As always, a healthy lifestyle fuels sustained results, and it’s highly unlikely such deep tissue remodelling in the treatment area will be required again.
