Changes in the lower eyelid region can affect both comfort and facial balance. For patients considering lower blepharoplasty, also known as lower eyelid surgery, it’s essential to understand the anatomical changes involved and the available options. At Dr Honeybrook Facial Plastic Surgery in Brisbane, treatments are tailored to support both functional and aesthetic goals, aligning with your underlying structure.
With age, structural changes beneath the eyes — including fat displacement and reduced tissue support — may lead to a more noticeable lower eyelid contour. Lower eyelid surgery can involve redistributing or adjusting tissue in the under-eye region to support smoother transitions between the eyelid and cheek.
Loss of skin elasticity can contribute to creasing and surface irregularities. A measured removal of excess skin can help refine the lower eyelid contour. This is done conservatively to maintain lid integrity and avoid tension. Results vary depending on skin type, facial anatomy, and healing response.
Hollowing beneath the lower eyelid, sometimes referred to as tear trough depth, may become more pronounced over time. In some cases, autologous fat transfer or structural release can help improve volume distribution in this area. A thorough pre-operative assessment guides the most appropriate technique.
Eyelid positioning is vital to ocular function. When the lower eyelid rotates outward (ectropion), patients may experience dry or irritated eyes. Surgical intervention may help support eyelid alignment and reduce exposure-related discomfort. The suitability of this approach is evaluated on an individual basis.
Excess lower eyelid tissue may, in some cases, affect peripheral vision or lead to eye strain. A tailored approach to lower eyelid correction may help restore visual openness and comfort. Functional improvement is assessed on a case-by-case basis and depends on the degree of tissue redundancy and other contributing factors.
Note: All procedures carry risks, and recovery times vary. A consultation is required to determine your suitability for eyelid surgery and to discuss benefits, limitations, and potential outcomes.
