Many patients in Queensland seek Dr Honeybrook’s opinion to address concerns related to neck and jawline contour, particularly when there’s a loss of definition between the lower face and neckline. A deep neck lift may be recommended depending on individual goals, anatomy, and skin quality. Below, we outline five important aspects of this individualised procedure.
A deep neck lift may be suitable for individuals who experience skin laxity or fullness in the neck, yet still retain good midface and jawline definition. It is typically recommended for people who are in good overall health and have maintained reasonable skin elasticity. For those over the age of 45, a combined approach such as a face and neck lift may be advised, depending on the degree of tissue laxity and skin behaviour.
Unlike traditional neck lifts, which generally address superficial fat and the platysma muscles at the surface level, a deep neck lift involves a more extensive reshaping of underlying structures. This may include deep fat compartments, digastric muscles, and in some cases, partial excision of the submandibular glands. This can help improve contour under the jawline in appropriate candidates.
Incisions are typically placed under the chin, and in some cases behind the ears, particularly if skin removal and additional tightening of the platysma muscle is required. This approach allows for more comprehensive access to reshape the underlying anatomy.
After surgical access is made, deeper layers of tissue and muscle can be repositioned to refine the contour of the neck. Where clinically appropriate, deeper structures such as the submandibular glands may also be adjusted to improve the overall contour of the area.
Temporary drains may be placed on each side of the neck to help minimise fluid buildup and swelling in the early recovery phase. Mild to moderate swelling is a common part of the healing process and typically reduces over the first few weeks. Incision lines may appear pink initially and tend to fade over several months. These areas can often be concealed with makeup if desired. Before your procedure, our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions to support healing.
In some cases, complementary procedures may be recommended. For example, buccal fat pad reduction or chin augmentation may be considered for individuals seeking further refinement of the facial contour. Skin resurfacing technologies such as laser treatments may also help improve the appearance of skin texture and support overall outcomes. All treatment options are considered on a case-by-case basis and tailored to the individual.
Dr Honeybrook is a specialist Head and Neck Surgeon and is also United States dual board-certified in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. His training includes advanced techniques learned under globally recognised surgeons, and his practice incorporates a tailored, evidence-informed approach.
While no surgical procedure can prevent the natural ageing process, patients may maintain the outcomes of surgery for extended periods by adopting healthy habits and protecting their skin from environmental damage. Applying sunscreen to the neck area, using supportive skincare, and following lifestyle recommendations can all contribute to long-term results.
In most cases, further neck surgery is not typically needed unless there are changes due to natural ageing or lifestyle factors. The team at Dr Honeybrook Facial Plastic Surgery is here to support your care journey with appropriate guidance at each step.
If you’re considering a deep neck lift or want to explore your options, we welcome you to book a consultation at our Queensland practice.
